The Hueman Project

Art has a remarkable ability to evoke emotion, inspire action, and serve as a catalyst for social change. Presently in progress, "The Hueman Project" is an immersive, multimedia experience exploring the essence of home through visual storytelling, interactive technology, and public art—co-created with those whose stories are honored here.

Hueman Project: KPRC News Story

This is the cohort of artists I worked with the complete the project. They were employed to make art that reflects their lived stories.

Home is not threshold we walk though. Home is who we are. This seven pillar journey is more than an under pass. It is a sacred portal through which we return to the home that we are listening to and engaging with the narratives of those who may be more at home with themselves than many people with homes.

Each color represents the nature of a person’s life and story. Each piece of furniture reflects what that story carries. The furniture functions as sculpture—made to support the lives we live. This project advocates for the dignity and lived realities of people experiencing homelessness by practicing cultural architecture.

Our intention is to harness the transformative power of art by collaborating with individuals affected by homelessness—empowering them to tell their own stories, in their own words. This project is designed for safety, movement, reflection, and dignity. We are inviting people who are named victims to become victors through the agency of their stories and resilience.

Some people live in houses of wood and metal yet are not at home in mind, body, or spirit. Others, without houses at all, are. This project activates an underpass—where many unhoused people live—as a shared journey toward home.

In partnership with the City of Houston, Midtown Management, Texas Department of Transportation, alongside an extraordinary team of artists and chosen family from Career and Recovery, my partner Peter Merwin and I are working with a solid team of creatives, activists, and architects to awaken a dark underpass with color to tell the stores of seven people effected by homelessness.

More than a project that disrupts the perception of homelessness, this is  a visual meditation and portal that leads us back to the homes that we are in mind, body, and spirit through the resilient stories of the unhoused. More than people who are in need of an agency of change, through the power of storytelling they are agents of change.

Our intention is to harness the transformative power of art by collaborating with individuals affected by homelessness—empowering them to tell their own stories, in their own words. This project is designed for safety, movement, reflection, and dignity. We are inviting people who are named victims to become victors through the agency of their stories and resilience.

These individuals are not merely victims of systemic failure—they are storytellers, visionaries, and change agents who nurture human flourishing through their lived experiences. This installation stands as a testament to their resilience, brilliance, and humanity.
